19 December 2024, Nairobi – The Philippines participated in the inaugural session of the Open-ended Intergovernmental Expert Working Group on Adequate Housing for All (OEWG-Housing), held in Nairobi on 9-11 December 2024.  The OEWG, established under UN-Habitat Assembly Resolution 2/7, brought together countries to discuss ways to accelerate progress toward making adequate housing universally available.

One of the side events of the OEWG was an interactive dialogue titled, “Localizing the Housing Agenda,” which aimed to underline the critical role of multilevel participatory governance to advance inclusive and sustainable housing, Ms. Aretha O. Garcia, Senior Economic Development Specialist for the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA), shared Philippine Government initiatives such as the Pambansang Pabahay Para sa Pilipino Housing Program (4PH).  She also stressed the importance of collaboration with the private sector and relevant stakeholders to address the housing backlog in the country.

More than 200 participants took part in the three-day session, including the President of the UN-Habitat Assembly, ministers of housing, Permanent Representatives to UN-Habitat and experts on housing.

The OEWG on Adequate Housing is scheduled to make its recommendations to address the global housing crisis during the Third Session of the UN-Habitat Assembly (UNHA-3) in 2029. 

The UN-Habitat is the United Nations’ program for sustainable urbanization and human settlements.  It plays a key role in supporting the achievement of SDG 11: Making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.  END
