THE PHILIPPINES JOINS THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY IN CELEBRATING THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF FAMILY REMITTANCES 2023

NAIROBI, 16 June 2023 – Philippine Ambassador to Kenya Marie Charlotte G. Tang joined the official observance ceremony of this year’s International Day of Family Remittances (IDFR) held at the United Nations Office in Nairobi.
Building on the theme of the IDFR 2023-2024 campaign – “Digital Remittances Towards Financial Inclusion and Cost Reduction”, Ambassador Tang, in her remarks, recognized remittance-sending overseas Filipino workers, who not only improve the lives of their families, but also contribute to the Philippines’ development efforts, including advancing on the Sustainable Development Goals. She also recognized the role of digitalization and financial innovations in promoting more affordable, faster and more efficient remittances and promoting financial inclusion.
Ambassador Tang reaffirmed the Philippines’ commitment to share its best practices from its migration and remittance experience, and expressed appreciation to the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the Global Forum on Remittances, Investment and Development Network (GFRIDN), IDFR champions and other valuable partners in the commemoration of the IDFR.
In 2018, the Philippines, together with Guatemala, Madagascar, and Algeria, led the adoption by the UN General Assembly of the landmark resolution declaring June 16th as the International Day of Family Remittances. END

AMB. TANG PRESENTS CREDENTIALS AS PH NON-RESIDENT ENVOY TO SOUTH SUDAN

Tang presented her credentials to South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit on 14 June 2023 in a ceremony held at the State House in Juba.
Ambassador Tang conveyed the warm felicitations of President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. to President Kiir and the people of South Sudan.
She noted that 2023 marks the 10th anniversary of Philippines-South Sudan diplomatic relations and expressed the hope to enhance cooperation between the two countries bilaterally and in the multilateral fora.
President Kiir stated that South Sudan is a young nation that seeks to pursue friendship with many countries, including the Philippines.
During the meeting, the inclusion of South Sudan’s basketball team in the upcoming FIBA World Cup to be held in Manila was also mentioned. Ambassador Tang wished the South Sudanese team, the first from East Africa to qualify for the FIBA World Cup, a successful performance in the tournament.
Ambassador Tang also met with various officials to explore ways to deepen the engagements between the Philippines and South Sudan including in the areas of agriculture, trade, and education.
South Sudan gained its independence in 2011 and is the world's youngest country.

PH AMBASSADOR VISITS FILIPINOS IN UNITED NATIONS MISSION IN SOUTH SUDAN

JUBA, 14 June 2023 - Philippine non-resident Ambassador to South Sudan Marie Charlotte G. Tang visited the Filipinos working in the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) on 13 June 2023 at the UNMISS Compound in Juba.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) currently has a contingent of 20 police officers (13 female and seven male) in the UNMISS. Among the duties carried out by the Filipino police are conducting trainings for their South Sudanese counterparts, supporting the police commands in different states of South Sudan, and undertaking public information engagements with local and international stakeholders.
With the Philippines being a leading advocate for gender equality and women empowerment, the Filipino female officers also assist in capacitating the local police in handling violence against women and children (VAWC) cases.
The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) also currently has two female military observers in the UNMISS who help monitor the security developments in the world's youngest country.
In addition to uniformed personnel, there are also a number of Filipino civilian employees who support the day-to-day operations of the UNMISS.
During the visit, Ambassador Tang thanked the Filipino peacekeepers, military observers, and civilian personnel for their service and dedication, and expressed that the Filipino people are proud of them.
UNMISS was created in July 2011 through the UN Security Council (UNSC) Resolution 1996. UNMISS is mandated to help consolidate the peace and security, and help establish conditions for development, following South Sudan's independence.
The Philippines' participation in the UNMISS is part of its long tradition of engagement with UN peacekeeping missions, as the country's contribution to the maintenance of international peace and security. END

PH EMBASSY CELEBRATES INDEPENDENCE DAY WITH FILIPINO COMMUNITIES IN EAST AFRICA
NAIROBI, 13 June 2023 – The Philippine Embassy in Nairobi and the Philippine Consulates in Uganda and Seychelles joined the Filipino communities in East Africa in celebrating the country’s Independence Day.
Consul Maria Rosanna O. Josue and Cultural Officer Sherlyn M. Roxas joined respectively the festivities organized in Dar es Salaam by the Kaibigan-Filipino Association in Tanzania and the Filipino Community of Tanzania on 10 and 11 June 2023, and in Kampala by the Filipino Community in Uganda on 11 June 2023.
During the festivities, the Embassy representatives conveyed the Independence Day message of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. They also commended the Filipino community for organizing the events that highlight the shared values, culture, and contributions of overseas Filipinos.
The gatherings showcased Philippine heritage and culture, including through culinary delights and traditional music and dance. The celebrations also provided an opportunity for Filipinos in these countries to come together, reconnect with their roots, and celebrate the country’s independence even while abroad.
Meanwhile, the Filipino community in Seychelles celebrated Kalayaan 2023 on 11 June, with Philippine Honorary Consul Rosita T. Parcou.
In South Sudan, Ambassador Marie Charlotte G. Tang and Vice Consul Louie Dane C. Merced met with members of the Filipino community in Juba on 12 June, during which special cakes to celebrate the country’s Independence Day were presented.
On its part, the Philippine Embassy held a flag-raising ceremony on 12 June to commemorate the occasion.
Additionally, the Embassy will host a Kalayaan celebration in Nairobi on 18 June 2023, co-organized with the Filipino Community in Kenya. END
